5 Things About The LG TONE Free Wireless Earbuds

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

The LG TONE Free is LG’s first-ever foray into true wireless earbuds, and they come with a pretty special feature, but we’ll talk about that later. But first, let’s talk about the design. These come in a puck-shaped charging case, with a soft-touch coating that feels great in the hand. The earbuds themselves are shaped pretty ergonomically, sitting comfortably in the ear even after prolonged periods of listening to music. And of course, LG’s long-time audio partner, Meridian Audio, has designed the sound for these earbuds.

Here are five things you should know about the LG TONE Free true wireless earbuds.

1. UVnano

So what’s so special about these earbuds? Well, these are the first self-sanitising earbuds, with LG’s UVnano feature. LG has built-in two UV LED lights into the charging case which kills bacteria on the speaker mesh. According to a 2019 test done by TUV SUD, 99% of E. Coli and S. aureus bacteria were killed within 10 minutes with the UV light. With everybody concerned about their personal hygiene these days, this is definitely a nice feature to keep your earbuds clean!

But do take note that the UV light only turns on when the earbuds are in the case and the charging case is closed, plugged in and charging. The blue light that shines briefly whenever the case is opened is purely decorative, although it’s a really nice touch!

2. Sound quality

Moving on to the sound, LG has partnered with Meridian Audio as mentioned previously, and the sound quality is to be expected, with accurately rendered bass and pretty good vocals and highs. All in all, it’s quite an engaging and musical sound signature that definitely will cater to most listeners. If that’s not to your liking though, Meridian Audio has provided four EQ presents, Immersive, Natural, Bass Boost and Treble Boost. An additional two custom EQ settings can also be customised.

The earbuds actually seal pretty well, providing good passive noise isolation. So if you ever feel you need to pump in a bit of external noise, the Ambient Sound Mode allows you to hear what’s going on with a single long press on the touchpad of the earbuds. For people who are heavy on voice assistants, the LG Tone Free earbuds are also compatible with Google Assistant and Siri. There are also dual microphones in the earbuds, which will help if you’re planning on taking work calls with these.

3. LG TONE Free app

But of course, let’s talk more about the LG TONE Free app, which you should definitely download once you get these earbuds. The app provides a lot more functionality that you’d otherwise be unable to access, including the ability to customise what taps and long presses on the touchpad do, as well as the option to lock the touchpad so you don’t accidentally pause your music or skip a track if you adjust the earbuds while they’re in your ears.

Remember the Ambient Sound mode we mentioned earlier? Well, the amount of ambient noise let in can be adjusted here too, so if you just want a bit of environmental noise, you can get it. Of course, we also get plenty of notifications from our phones these days. Not only can you get these notifications read through the earbuds, you can also choose exactly which applications you want to hear notifications from, all through the app.

As we all know, earbuds are one of the most commonly misplaced items, and little wonder. These tiny things are definitely hard to find once dropped. With the Find My Earbuds feature though, you can get a map of where your earbuds were last connected to your phone if they’re out of Bluetooth range, and if they’re in Bluetooth range? Well, the earbuds will start playing a chirping sound that gets pretty loud and you’ll definitely be able to find them. The LG TONE Free also supports Bluetooth 5.0.

4. Battery life

But how’s the battery life? Well, you get up to six hours of playback in the earbuds on a full charge, and an additional 12 hours in the cradle, totalling up to 18 hours*. As if that’s not enough, LG has also packed in fast charge, so you’ll be able to get an hour of playback time after just five minutes charging**!

*Battery life will vary when using a microphone.

*Standard playtime when listening to music.

*The earbud batteries and battery last for 6 and 12 hours respectively when listening to music.

**Enjoy 1 hour of music playtime after charging the cradle for 5 minutes with the earbuds inside.

5. IPX4 water resistance

And for people looking to exercise with this, you’re in luck. The LG TONE Free has IPX4 water resistance, so they’ll hold up nicely to sweat, a drizzle of rain or small splashes of water when out and about.

There are plenty of great-sounding earbuds on the market, and LG’s TONE Free earbuds not only sound great, but also show that they are one step ahead of the competition for thinking about hygiene-conscious consumers, and addressing that concern with the LG TONE Free.

The LG TONE Free HBS-FN6 is available in matte Stylish Black and glossy Modern White. You can find them at authorised retailers Best Denki, Courts, Harvey Norman, POPULAR, and LG Lazada and Shopee official store at a recommended retail price of S$268.
