5 Things That Make the Huawei MateBook 14 Possibly the Best Laptop for Work and Play

You might be familiar with Huawei’s phones, like the newest P40 and Mate 40 series offerings, but did you know that Huawei has laptops as well? In fact, Huawei’s MateBook 13 was our top pick for the best lightweight laptop of 2020. The company has just released its newest and latest laptop, the MateBook 14, and here are five things you should know about it.

1. AMD Ryzen processor

Previously, Huawei’s laptops all ran on Intel chips, and that’s perfectly fine, but with AMD’s new Ryzen chips actually performing better than expectations, Huawei has gone along for the ride by using the newest AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor. You might be saying, “hold on, the Intel and AMD chips are pretty much neck and neck in terms of performance”, and that’s true.

But think of it this way, the AMD chips might perform the same as the 11th-gen Intel Tiger Lake ones, but to get the equivalent chip in another laptop, you’ll have to pay much more than what you’re paying for the MateBook 14.

2. 56Wh battery

But what good is a laptop if you bring it out and it dies after just a few hours of work? The MateBook 14 comes with a 56 watt-hour battery that is claimed to last up to 10 hours of continuous 1080p video playback on a single charge, or up to eight and a half hours of web browsing.

The laptop also comes with a 65W USB-C charger that can charge the laptop from 0-46% in just 30 minutes, meaning you can easily give it a quick battery boost if you’re working in a cafe or somewhere with an electrical outlet.

3. Unique screen with 2K FullView Display

The first time you use a Huawei laptop, you might find it feels a bit different. That’s because they use a 3:2 aspect ratio instead of the standard 16:9. This results in a longer screen lengthwise, allowing for more content or text to be displayed at once. If you need to do a lot of reading, writing or if you use software like Excel where there’s a lot of data, you’ll definitely appreciate the aspect ratio that Huawei has chosen. It’s even a 1440p display with a 90% screen-to-body ratio, which means less of the screen is taken up by bezels.

4. 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD storage

Similar to last year’s MateBook 13, the MateBook 14 will come in a single configuration, with no options to upgrade the RAM or storage capacity. However, the default 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage will most likely be more than enough for most users, and there’s always the option of purchasing an external drive for additional storage.

5. S$1,298

If you’re feeling a bit disgruntled about having to purchase an external drive for storage though, keep in mind that the MateBook 14 comes in at just S$1,298. That’s right, you get 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage, a really good AMD Ryzen 5 chip and a 2K FullView Display and the laptop even costs less than its predecessor, the MateBook 13 at S$1,598. As part of the launch promotions, customers will even get a backpack, Bluetooth mouse and a warranty extension of one year for free worth S$295, which is just sweetening the deal at this point.

The HUAWEI MateBook 14 is available in all Huawei Concept Stores, selected consumer electronic stores and Huawei official online stores in Shopee and Lazada.
