Adobe Launches Free Photoshop App for Mobile Phones

Adobe has introduced a free version of its Photoshop app for mobile phones, aiming to attract younger users. The company announced on Tuesday that the app is now available for Apple's iPhone, with an Android version coming soon.

A premium version is also available for USD 7.99 per month, offering additional features, more cloud storage, and access to the web-based version of Photoshop for editing on larger screens. This marks the lowest-cost subscription for Photoshop, which previously started at USD 9.99 per month for Apple's iPad.

Adobe's move comes as mobile operating systems from Apple and Google have integrated many Photoshop-like features for free, such as colour adjustments and object removal. The company is looking to maintain its relevance among creative professionals, as its software still accounts for more than half of its sales.

Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe's vice president of product marketing for creative professional apps, said the company is targeting younger users who primarily use their phones for photography and editing. The free version of the app includes features such as layer splitting, masking, and text addition, making it useful for creating content like podcast covers, streaming music playlists, and YouTube thumbnails.

"We spent a lot of time and energy testing directly with our target user base, which is the next-generation creator who does a lot on their phone," Subramaniam said. "It is the way that they express personal creativity, and the application is really built for them."
