Alleged Google Pixel Watch Photos Surfaced, Ahead of Imminent Announcement
Google’s long-rumoured smartwatch could be on the way, given the multitude of leaks that have seemingly confirmed the device’s existence. Chief among them are new photos of what’s believed to be an actual prototype of the yet-to-be-official wearable.
According to Android Central, an anonymous source sent them photos of a testing model of the so-called Pixel Watch that was left and found in some U.S. restaurant. While the jury is still out on whether the photos are real or not, it’s worth noting that they look almost identical to the leaked renders that surfaced online a while back.
Going by the photos, Google’s first smartwatch will sport a rounded, almost bezel-free shape with a right-mounted rotating crown and potentially two hidden buttons. It’s not as easy to tell from the photos but there could also be one other button sitting on top of the crown.
The watch bands, meanwhile, are proprietary Google bands that look to be made of a soft, jelly-like material. They connect directly to the lugs on the watch, which suggests that there won’t be quick-release straps to easily swap out bands. Then again, no one is sure yet if this design is final, so this could still change.
The wearable additionally has a microphone hole at the bottom and set of sensors that’ll likely include a heart-rate monitor and and skin temperature sensors, among other health and fitness trackers. The source noted how the bottom also “looks metallic but feels like it’s coated with glass”. It could also support the magnetic Qi standard, considering how many devices today ship with wireless charging capabilities.
As for the software, it’s not known yet what the device will run as the source was not able to get past the boot logo. Google is expected to use the new Wear OS 3 that it co-developed with Samsung, though this could also change.
The source in a Reddit thread also mentioned that the Pixel Watch is about half an inch thick and about one and a half inch in diameter, which is roughly 12.7 mm and 38.1 mm, respectively. He also said it is “very rounded so there is less contact made with the wrist”.
Spec-wise, no details have been shared yet. However, if we’re to once again go by the leaks, the watch could house an Exynos chipset coupled with one and a half gigs of RAM memory.
It’s also not known yet when the watch might come out. Previous rumblings claim it was slated to launch sometime in May, though this hasn’t been confirmed. What’s clear at this point is that Google is indeed working on a smart watch and an announcement is imminent.
