British cellphone carrier Vodafone has successfully conducted the first-ever space mobile video call from a remote area in Wales. This innovative service is expected to be accessible later this year, marking a significant advancement in satellite technology. The call, witnessed by British astronaut Tim Peake, seamlessly connected satellites to Vodafone's terrestrial network, paving the way for a new era of communication.

Vodafone proudly announced that this service will be the world's first satellite service to provide mobile broadband directly to regular 4G or 5G phones. The company has set a timeline for the launch, stating that they aim to introduce the first commercial direct-to-smartphone broadband satellite service in Europe by late 2025 and 2026.

Unlike traditional satellite services that require special hardware, Vodafone's offering eliminates the need for a special dish, terminal, or expensive satellite phone. Users will experience seamless connectivity similar to existing 4G and 5G networks, enabling them to effortlessly switch between space and ground-based networks using everyday smartphones.

The historic video call was made from a remote area in Wales that previously lacked mobile broadband coverage, highlighting the transformative impact of this technological breakthrough. The call utilised Bluebird satellites from AST SpaceMobile, a company at the forefront of space-based connectivity solutions.

Abel Avellan, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, expressed his excitement about the achievement, which included the first space-based 5G voice call. Avellan emphasised the partnership with Vodafone and the shared commitment to advancing space-based broadband connectivity, aiming to bridge connectivity gaps and make cellular broadband accessible to all.
