Aptera Unveils Solar-Powered EV with Up To 1,000-Mile Range

Aptera, a California-based company, is on the brink of delivering its long-awaited Aptera Solar EV, set to redefine electric mobility. The futuristic two-seater vehicle, resembling a blend of a duckbill and a cow tongue, boasts an impressive range of up to 1,000 miles. What sets this EV apart is its ability to operate without the need for recharging if the daily commute is under 40 miles, thanks to its efficient solar cells integrated throughout the car.

After years of technical challenges and delays, Aptera showcased the production-ready Aptera EV at CES 2025, a concept initially introduced in 2007. Co-CEO Chris Anthony expressed optimism, highlighting the vehicle as a culmination of years of innovation aimed at reducing carbon emissions and reshaping energy-efficient transportation.

The Aptera EV's design, crafted with the expertise of Pininfarina, features a sleek, aerodynamic body with a drag coefficient of just 0.13, making it one of the most aerodynamic cars. Despite its compact size, the vehicle offers ample space for two passengers and a generous 32.5 cubic feet of storage in the trunk.

Equipped with a 201 hp 150 kW electric motor and a lightweight construction of under 2,000 lbs, the Aptera EV delivers swift acceleration, reaching 60 mph in six seconds and a top speed of 101 mph. The vehicle houses a modest 45 kWh battery, enabling quick recharging from a standard wall outlet, with an impressive cruising range of 400 miles on a full charge.

A standout feature of the Aptera Solar EV is its integrated solar panels across various surfaces, capable of generating 700W of solar power daily, equivalent to a 40-mile range. This innovation offers the possibility of never needing to plug in the vehicle, especially in sun-drenched locations.

Available for pre-order at approximately $40,000, the Aptera EV is expected to enter production later this year, offering different configurations to cater to diverse preferences. These configurations include a variant with an extended 1,000-mile range, a potentially all-wheel-drive option, a more affordable model with reduced range, and another with increased cargo capacity.

  • Aptera's Solar EV promises up to 1,000 miles of range without the need for recharging for short commutes.

  • The vehicle's aerodynamic design, lightweight construction, and efficient electric motor offer impressive performance.

  • Integrated solar panels provide daily solar power equivalent to a 40-mile range, reducing the need for traditional charging.
