China's Pony.ai Expands Robotaxi Services to Hong Kong, Following Baidu's Lead
Guangzhou-based autonomous driving company Pony.ai Inc is gearing up to introduce its robotaxi services in Hong Kong, stepping into the same arena as tech giant Baidu. The move comes as Pony.ai sets its sights on a global expansion of its operations.
Pony.ai, listed on Nasdaq, is planning to kick off its robotaxi services by offering commuting options for airport staff at Hong Kong International Airport. The company aims to later extend its services to other urban areas within the city, although no specific timeline has been disclosed yet.
Following the approval of its trial application in North Lantau by the Hong Kong government in November, Chinese AI leader Baidu is also preparing to roll out its driverless taxi service in the city.
Pony.ai has already secured robotaxi service licences in major Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Additionally, the company is actively looking into expanding its autonomous driving business to various international locations, including South Korea, Luxembourg, the Middle East, and other countries.
