China's Quora-like Zhihu Debuts an AI-powered Search and Answer Function to Engage More Users

Zhihu, China's Quora-like platform, has launched Zhida, an AI-powered search and answer function. Zhida uses generative AI to automatically search, summarise, and generate responses to user questions. Tencent and Alibaba have also implemented generative AI into their businesses, proving the technology's widespread use in China.

This tool uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically search, summarise, and generate responses to platform users' requests. The introduction of Zhida highlights how AI technology has quickly become an essential component of online consumer products in China.

Zhihu's creator, chairman, and CEO, Zhou Yuan, showcased the platform's generative AI service during a Beijing event. Zhida uses Zhihu's huge information repository to deliver immediate answers to user questions. Zhihu joins the ranks of Chinese tech companies that have incorporated generative AI algorithms into their web services. Generative AI may generate a variety of content, such as audio, code, images, text, simulations, and movies.

Tencent Holdings, Zhihu's early investor, incorporated its Hunyuan large language model (LLM) into over 180 services last year. This technology supports generative AI applications such as ChatGPT and has also been integrated into Tencent Meeting, Tencent Docs, WeChat, and the company's online advertising operations. Similarly, Alibaba Group Holding incorporated its Tongyi Qianwen LLM into DingTalk, its enterprise collaboration software, to enhance workplace discussions. Over 90,000 corporate clients in China currently use Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen family of LLMs.

During Zhihu's first-quarter earnings call, the company's CFO, Wang Han, emphasised the use of AI to optimise processes. AI has played an important role in assessing platform data, supporting users in developing high-quality content, and increasing website traffic. Wang underlined that Zhihu's AI-powered search function, which was introduced in March, has already helped to drive double-digit increase in measures like user retention and engagement. Looking ahead, Zhihu intends to direct its AI expenditures towards the application layer in the coming years.
