State news agency Xinhua reported Xi's emphasis on the need for international collaboration and governance in the field of AI. Xi highlighted China's commitment to supporting developing countries and proposed joint efforts with other G20 members to enhance access to scientific and technological advancements for the Global South.

During discussions on global governance reform, Xi voiced concerns about protectionist measures hindering green and low-carbon development. He specifically mentioned tariffs imposed by G20 nations on Chinese products like electric vehicles and biodiesel, fearing such actions could impede their transition to greener economies. Xi stressed the importance of enhancing global trade governance to foster an open world economy, as reported by Xinhua.

Xi's remarks in Rio de Janeiro echo his recent statements at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Lima, Peru, where he also criticised protectionism.
