Chinese Start-Up Pioneers Robot Chefs and AI in Restaurant Kitchens
Botinkit introduces Omni, a versatile robot chef for restaurant kitchens. AI is used to maintain cooking precision and develop recipes. The company aims for global expansion after securing US$21 million in funding.
Botinkit, founded in 2021 by CEO Shirley Chen Rui, aims to showcase that robots can cook dishes as delicious as human chefs.
Chen believes that the traditional kitchen industry is ripe for innovation, stating, "The kitchen is the biggest industry in the world because everyone everywhere needs to eat. However, it’s still a very traditional industry today, but that’s not the direction the world is heading."
Botinkit's flagship product, Omni, is a versatile robot capable of stir-frying, stewing, seasoning dishes, and self-cleaning with minimal manual intervention. Operators can easily follow recipe instructions displayed on a touch screen to prepare dishes, ensuring consistency and quality across multiple robots.
The company leverages AI to maintain precise cooking temperatures and seasoning levels. Chen is also exploring AI-generated recipes to cater to evolving tastes in the restaurant industry. According to Botinkit, deploying cooking robots can reduce labour costs by 30% and cut food waste by 10%.
Chen emphasises that Botinkit's focus is on human-machine collaboration rather than full automation. She believes that cooking requires a human touch and that robots should complement rather than replace chefs. The company's approach aligns with the rising trend of automation in the food industry, with robots assisting in meal delivery and cooking tasks.
In a recent funding round led by CCV Capital, Botinkit raised US$21 million to support its global expansion. With operations in 19 countries, the company is targeting further growth in Europe and the US. Chen sees these markets as key battlegrounds for the future of digital kitchens and automation in response to labour shortages.
Botinkit faces competition from companies like US-based Miso Robotics, known for deploying robotic arms in various kitchen tasks. The company's early backers include Li Zexiang, a prominent engineering professor and angel investor. Chen envisions a future where digital kitchens, powered by robots and intelligent systems, will dominate restaurant operations, allowing humans to focus on recipe creation and adding personal touches to dishes.
