In a whirlwind of excitement, limited-edition wireless earbuds designed to resemble the iconic mushroom-shaped chocolate snack from Japan sold out within a mere 10 minutes on Tuesday. Meiji, the renowned candy maker, experienced a surge of orders as soon as the earbuds became available for purchase on the Makuake crowdfunding website at noon. Priced at 29,800 yen ($196) each, the 3,500 units vanished in the blink of an eye.

"We're taken aback by the unexpected response," expressed a Meiji representative during a Makuake event. However, the company has confirmed that there are no immediate plans to restock the popular earbuds.

These delightful devices bear a striking resemblance to Meiji's beloved mushroom-shaped Kinoko no Yama sweets, which have been delighting taste buds since their debut in 1975. Known as Chocorooms in English, these candies have amassed a devoted following in Japan, alongside the bamboo-shoot-shaped Takenoko no Sato chocolates.

While Kinoko no Yama may not be a household name overseas, Meiji has been diligently working to change that. The company embarked on the development of these unique earbuds in 2023, with the aim of elevating their global brand profile.

One of the standout features of these earbuds is their ability to provide simultaneous interpretation in an impressive 144 languages through a dedicated app. Meiji hopes that the eye-catching sight of Chocorooms adorning the ears will pique the interest of individuals from around the world, further enhancing the brand's appeal beyond Japan's borders.

In a world where technology and fashion converge, these chocolate mushroom-shaped earbuds have captured the hearts of consumers, combining functionality with a touch of whimsy. While the initial batch may have sold out in record time, fans of Meiji and confectionery enthusiasts will undoubtedly be eagerly awaiting any future releases.
