Computex 2019: Alienware And Dell Announces Sleek New Gaming Laptops And Headsets

In the world of gaming laptops and desktops, there are a few names that stand out, but Alienware is one of the oldest around. Here’s some of the new laptops that Alienware and their parent company Dell have announced at Computex 2019.

The Area 51m laptop caught a lot of eyes when it was announced in January 2019, both for the striking design and hefty price tag. The new Alienware m15 and m17 have taken some design cues from the Area 51m, with the rear exhaust of the laptops retaining the hexagonal vents and the blue led strip that runs around the entirety of the exhaust.

With Intel’s 9th generation processors, displays ranging from 240Hz FHD to 4K OLED and a choice between NVIDIA’s GTX 1650, GTX 1660Ti, RTX 2060, RTX 2070 and RTX 2080, the 2019 laptops seem extremely promising.

I do particularly enjoy the inclusion of Tobii Eye Tracking. While not very prevalent amongst gamers yet, there are some games that utilise the technology to do stuff like move the in-game camera in the direction your eyes track rather than the gamer having to do it themselves with the mouse.

The most interesting thing is the built-in blue light filter. Alienware claims the new EyeSafe display doesn’t affect the colour gamut so the screen won’t have the yellow tint that appears when the screen’s blue light filter is activated.

The Alienware m15 (starting at US$1,499, Singapore pricing to be announced) and the m17 (starting at US$1,599, Singapore pricing to be announced) will both be available in Singapore from early July 2019.

The one Alienware gaming headset that’s already come to market looks exactly like you’d expect it to; angular and eye-catching, but not necessarily something you’d wear out of the house.

But now Alienware seems to have taken a step towards fashion with the new AW310H and AW510H.

The AW310H uses custom-tuned 50mm drivers and claims to offer a wide, dynamic sound stage and audio clarity. What I really like is the more subtle touch with the design. The all-black model looks like something I’d happily wear out on the streets, largely thanks to the retractable boom microphone that almost disappears into the headset.

If you’re an audiophile, the AW510H will be right up your alley with 7.1 Stereo Surround Sound through the use of a USB DAC. Both headphones look exactly the same on the outside. The leatherette hybrid memory foam earpads did catch my eye, hopefully they’ll stay cool enough during prolonged periods of gaming.

The price and availability for both headphones in Singapore has yet to be announced.

For those looking for a laptop that’s more subtle but still powerful, the new G3 15 from Dell will be what you’re looking for. Running on 9th generation Intel cores, the choices for NVIDIA’s discrete graphics range from the GTX 1050 to the GTX 1660Ti.

While not the newest and most powerful, the cards do provide enough graphical power to run most games in 1080p on modest settings and still achieve a decent framerate. The displays available run up to 144Hz refresh rate as well.

The G3 15 (starting at S$1,899) is available in Singapore from early June 2019.
