CES 2021: AMD Introduces Ryzen 5000 Series Mobile Processors For Laptops

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

You have to admit, AMD has been on quite the roll these past couple of years. Ryzen is slowly becoming the next favourite among creatives and gamers alike and at CES 2021, AMD is introducing the next step for Ryzen for all the laptop gamers and creatives out there.

AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Mobile Processors

Based on the “Zen 3” core architecture, AMD Ryzen 5000 Series will introduce even higher performance over the previous generation, yet with better power efficiency. Like previous generations, Ryzen 5000 Series will include the high-performance H-Series as well as the ultra-mobile U-Series processors.

Taking the throne at the top of the product stack is the new AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX. Featuring 8 cores and 16 threads clocked at a base frequency of 3.3GHz and a boost frequency of up to 4.8GHz, the Ryzen 9 5980HX will be able to provide up to 23% more performance in single-threaded workloads and up to 17% faster multi-threaded performance over the previous generation Ryzen 9 4900H. It will also feature 20MB of cache with a base TDP configuration of 45W. AMD will also be introducing the HS variants of the processors as well, which will be able to provide similar if not the same performance as the standard H-Series but with a much lower TDP configuration.

As for the U-Series processors, the flagship at the moment would be the Ryzen 7 5800U. Featuring 8 cores and 16 threads with a base frequency of 1.9GHz and a boost frequency of up to 4.4GHz. Compared to the previous generation Ryzen 7 4800U, it will be able to provide up to 16% higher single-threaded performance and up to 14% faster multi-threaded performance. The new processor will also boast higher efficiency, allowing it to achieve up to 17.5 hours of battery life for general day-to-day usage and up to 21 hours of movie playback on a single charge.

It goes without saying that AMD will be releasing a whole slew of Ryzen 5000 Series Mobile Processors, ranging from the AMD Ryzen 3 5300U to the AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX. For the full range of processors which AMD will be releasing, do refer to the table below.

The new Ryzen 5000 Series Mobile Processors will be available in the first half of 2021. OEMs including Asus, HP and Lenovo will bring AMD Ryzen 5000 systems to the market starting in February 2021, with more than 150 systems expected to launch this year.

AMD Ryzen 9 5900 / Ryzen 7 5800 Desktop Processors

Although not the highlight of the keynote, AMD will also be releasing reduced-TDP alternatives of the Ryzen 9 5900X and the Ryzen 7 5800X desktop processors. However, these two processors will only be available via pre-built OEM systems. The catch is the rather low TDP of just 65W. For people who are into custom PC building and Mini-ITX systems, these can be rather interesting. If you are able to get your hand on these processors, your compact yet powerful Mini-ITX dream build might just come true.
