Master & Dynamic MW07 vs Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless: Battle Of The Premium TWS Earphones

We previously talked about the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless earphones and how the sound quality was quite unmatched. Recently, we got to try the MW07 from Master & Dynamic and we thought it would be a good comparison to test out these two similarly priced earphones.

The Sennheiser MTW comes with a gray fabric covered pill-box carrying case, that is a little on the bulky side and might not be the most comfortable to carry around in a pocket.

The MW07 comes in a very premium-looking stainless steel case which does feel hefty in the hand, and it’s a bit more compact than the Sennheiser MTW, which makes it more convenient to carry around. But because it’s made of stainless steel, it’s more prone to scratches and being dinged-up so that might be something to consider if you like your electronics looking pristine.

There’s a soft carrying pouch included in the original packaging, but honestly, I wouldn’t want to have to carry my carrying case in an additional pouch. But it’s definitely a nice touch for those who can be bothered to use it, and most people should, seeing as it’s a S$459 product.

The earbuds for the MW07 do look more premium in my opinion as there’s a wide variety of faceplates to choose from. The ones we got for review were the Grey Terrazzo and Tortoiseshell acetate designs. I do like the tortoiseshell design as it matches with my spectacles, and it does exude a more classy vibe than the standard black or white earbuds you see on the market.

But if you’re looking for something more eyecatching or if you’re a fan of metallic accents, the Sennheiser MTW will be for you. The entire faceplate is made of a piece of shiny metal that will definitely help the wearer stand out in a crowd.

Fit-wise, the MTW does a great job of being comfortable and the size of the shell means that the passive noise isolation is better than the MW07. But if you’re looking for a secure fit, the MW07 comes with rubber sleeves that have a wing design with mini fins that sit in the concha of your ear and keep the bud in place.

But of couse, the sound is the most important factor. I feel that the sound is actually quite similar between the two. Both are tuned more neutrally but the MW07 is actually straddling the line between neutral and warm. So if you enjoy warmer sound signatures like me, but don’t want to lose the detail in the mids and highs, the MW07 is the way to go.

If you prefer a slightly more analytical sound that offers excellent separation, a wider soundstage and a bit more detail, then the Sennheiser MTW is the one for you.

The connection on the MTW is much better than the MW07, because it’s using the newer Bluetooth 5.0 instead of the Bluetooth 4.2 that the MW07 is using. It also supports SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX Low Latency, while the MW07 only supports SBC, AAC and aptX.

Battery life wise, these two are pretty similar as well. The Sennheisers are claimed to have 4 hours in the buds with a total of 12 hours thanks to the case, but I only got around 3 hours of playback time in the buds for a total of around 9 hours.

The MW07 are supposed to have 3.5 hours, but I only got around 3 hours of playback from the earbuds. Thankfully, the charging case has 3 additional charges so I managed to get around 12 hours or so in total. It’s still not great, but it’s definitely better than the Sennheisers in this regard.

These are some pricey true wireless earphones, with the Sennheiser costing S$469 and the Master & Dynamic costing S$459. If you’re looking for the best sound quality that money can give you in the true wireless market right now and money isn’t an issue, then yes, you should be looking at these two and making a decision between them.

It seems that the tradeoff for better sound quality is unfortunately, a shorter battery life and higher price. But it’s early days yet and I’m hopeful that as the technology in these improve, that we’ll get this level of sound quality at a price that’s more palatable for the general public.
