The island's Fort Siloso Skywalk is hosting tests for the world's first outdoor 5G-enabled extended reality (XR) experience called, The Battle of Fort Siloso: A 5G-enabled XR Experience. The heritage-themed experience puts visitors into a fictional World War Two battle at the historic fort through virtual story-telling and game mechanics. It also leverages the capabilities of XR and 5G tech to bring an immersive audio-visual simulation of war, which visitors can also actively take part in.

The trial experience, which was developed by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Sentosa Development

Corporation (SDC) and Government Technology Agency (GovTech), is now open for registrations for members of the Sentosa Islander programme. It'll be running every Friday and Saturday from 2 to 24 June 2023 between 7:00 to 9:00pm.

SDC looks to get feedback from visitors through the trial to identify areas for further enhancement and deployment.

"Through exploring immersive technologies in partnership with STB and GovTech, we are excited to bring on digitally innovative experiences for our guests to try out on Sentosa," said Mr Michael Ma, SDC Assistant Chief Executive. "Such a trial is a key step in our journey to evaluate unique opportunities to enhance tourism offerings on Sentosa as we gear up for the recovery of international arrivals, minimising extensive physical infrastructure on preserved heritage sites such as Fort Siloso."

The new experience is also part of the 5G@Sentosa testbed, which is a collaborative project led by GovTech, SDC and Singtel. The testbed's objective is to accelerate the adoption of 5G connectivity ahead of Singapore's nationwide rollout of the cellular network standard in 2025 by enabling agencies to demo various use cases for the tech.

A total of 30 trials from about ten agencies have been undertaken on Sentosa since the programme launched in October 2021. Some of the 5G use cases have already been commercialised under the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s (IMDA) 5G Innovation Programme, including health tech and construction applications.
