FTC Sending Refunds To Fortnite Players Charged For Unwanted Items—Here’s Who Is Eligible
Refunds totalling over US$72 million are being sent to Fortnite players in the U.S. who were charged for unintended purchases. Claimants have until January to file for refunds, with the next round deadline set for January 10, 2025. The FTC plans to distribute further refunds, with payment amounts dependent on the number of claims filed.
This initiative stems from a settlement reached last year, addressing concerns about players being misled into making unwanted purchases.
A substantial sum of over US$72 million is being distributed to Fortnite players in the United States who were erroneously charged for items they did not intend to buy within the game. Fortnite, known for its in-game purchases like outfits, emotes, and weapon skins, is now compensating affected players.
According to the FTC, individuals who submitted a claim by October 8 are currently receiving payments. Those who filed claims after this date can expect refunds in the future, while there is still an opportunity for those yet to file a claim, with a deadline set for January.
This initial round of refunds, totalling US$72 million, is just the beginning, as stated by Lina Khan, the chair of the regulatory agency. Claimants have the option to receive their refunds via check or PayPal, providing a convenient process for reimbursement.
Players who were mistakenly charged in-game currency for undesired items between January 2017 and September 2022 are eligible for refunds. Additionally, parents whose children made unauthorised charges on their credit cards between January 2017 and November 2018 can also apply. Furthermore, players who faced account restrictions after disputing charges with their credit card company are included in the refund scheme. Claimants must be at least 18 years old, with parents or guardians able to complete claim forms for minors.
Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, is expected to owe approximately $173 million in refunds after the initial round is concluded.
Fortnite's developer, Epic Games, faced a substantial penalty of $520 million in 2022 to settle allegations of deceptive practices leading to unwanted purchases. Regulators highlighted issues with the game's user interface, accusing it of encouraging inadvertent transactions with a single button press. Moreover, concerns were raised about the ease with which minors could make purchases without parental consent and the locking of accounts for customers disputing charges.
Despite being a private company, Epic Games' financial details remain undisclosed. However, Fortnite's immense success since its launch in 2017 is undeniable, with the game being a prominent title in the gaming industry. Fortnite has garnered a massive following on platforms like Twitch and has engaged in collaborations with major brands like Disney, hosting virtual events that have attracted millions of viewers.
