Fujifilm XF50mm f/1: A New Benchmark

This is the fastest 50mm lens in Fujifilm’s lineup, and while it hasn’t been announced yet, let’s take a look at how the fastest autofocus lens in the world, the Fujifilm XF 50mm f/1.0, performs.

The lens began as a 35mm lens, but it got scrapped and the feedback given by testers made their way into this 50mm. According to a scale, it’s 850 grams, which isn’t too light. It might not be a 50mm lens you carry around everyday, but for portraits, you’ll want to take a look at the photos that come out of this.

The way this lens renders images is quite reminiscent of the Zeiss Otus series, portraits are natural and the separation of the subject and background is great.

The lens is sharp, has great bokeh and it’s just really impressive even when shooting in JPEG. At f/1.0, this is a high-performance lens. The fall-off is really something else.

Compared to the 56mm f/1.2, the 50mm f/1.0 is definitely sharper and you can visibly see the difference in bokeh.

Next up is the 50mm f.2, and the difference is very much obvious here. But what if you take the 50mm f/1.0 and stop it down to f/2? Well, we tried it and it still looks different. The bokeh is smoother while still retaining sharpness.

While the bokeh isn’t completely rounded and you might still find some cat’s eye bokeh here and there, the 50mm f/1.0 really delivers.
