The announcement was made by Google in a blog post, revealing that AP will supply a stream of real-time news to enhance the content available on the Gemini app. Kristin Heitmann, AP's chief revenue officer, highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two companies, focusing on delivering timely and accurate news globally.

Heitmann expressed AP's satisfaction with Google's recognition of the value of their journalism and their dedication to impartial reporting. The financial details of the agreement between Google and AP have not been disclosed at this time.

Gemini, previously known as Bard, serves as Google's response to the growing demand for generative AI tools capable of various tasks such as document composition, image generation, and coding assistance. AP has been proactive in diversifying its revenue streams, including a recent deal with OpenAI in 2023 to license its news archive for AI training purposes.

While tech companies argue that using publicly available text for AI training falls under "fair use," news organisations have raised concerns about unauthorised use of their content. The New York Times and other media outlets have taken legal action against AI companies for copyright infringement, underscoring the ongoing debate between news publishers and tech firms.

Alex Mahadevan from The Poynter Institute's Mediawise emphasised the dilemma faced by publishers - either collaborate with AI companies to leverage their technology or engage in legal battles to protect their content. Such partnerships, while posing challenges, also offer news outlets a valuable revenue source and enhance the quality of information available online.

The AP, known for its unbiased reporting, delivers news through various mediums, including text, images, videos, and interactive content on APNews.com. Despite facing revenue declines from traditional newspaper clients, the AP continues to explore new revenue streams, including philanthropic support, to navigate the challenges in the news industry.
