Google Pixel 9 Gains Exclusive Multi-Camera Video Feature

Google has introduced a new camera feature for Pixel smartphones, allowing users to shoot video from multiple angles using a wirelessly connected external camera. Unlike the iPhone, this functionality does not require third-party streaming apps.

The feature, called Connected Cameras, is part of Google’s March Pixel Feature Drop. It is available exclusively on the Pixel 9 series and enables users to stream video from two different angles when using apps such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.

Users can switch between local and remote cameras while recording, with audio captured from the active camera. Compatible remote cameras include Pixel 6 or newer models and GoPro Hero 10 or later. While multiple remote cameras can be paired, only one can be connected at a time.

How to Enable Connected Cameras

To activate Connected Cameras, users must navigate to the Connected Devices section in their Pixel 9 series smartphone settings. Once enabled, a new camera picker appears when streaming video with a compatible app, allowing seamless switching between cameras.

The feature requires a Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, or Pixel 9 Pro Fold as the primary device.

Potential Drawbacks

Connected Cameras relies on Google’s cross-device services, meaning both devices must be signed in with the same Google Account. This prevents users from connecting a friend’s Pixel 6 as a remote camera.

Another limitation is that audio recording automatically switches to the active camera. This may be inconvenient for users who want to maintain audio from the primary device while switching views.

Switching between cameras is not instantaneous, as a countdown appears on-screen when changing views. This delay may hinder users who need quick cuts, such as those recording unboxing videos.

There are also concerns about potential misuse, as remote recording devices could be used to covertly record or live stream others without their consent.

The March 2025 Pixel Feature Drop is available now, though some features may not be immediately accessible in all regions.
