Hong Kong Start-Up Introduces AI-Powered Smart Bin to Revolutionise Recycling
Green AI Technology introduces AI-powered smart bin for precise waste segregation. Hong Kong aims to increase solid waste recovery rate to 40-45% by 2035. Green AI develops AI-driven waste sorting machine for post-collection recycling market.
This cutting-edge technology aims to enhance recycling efforts in the city by enabling accurate waste segregation and increasing the value of collected waste for recycling purposes.
The smart bins developed by Green AI will initially target shopping centres, hotels, and commercial buildings, particularly those owned by listed companies. These establishments are subject to Hong Kong stock exchange regulations mandating the disclosure of waste data and the establishment of waste reduction targets as part of sustainability reporting.
Cola Lam, co-founder and CEO of Green AI, highlighted the limitations of traditional bins for waste reporting purposes, stating that "Smart bins enable accurate waste segregation and enhance the value of the waste collected for recycling." The company's sorting bins are equipped with advanced technology such as scanners, conveyor belts, and digital scales to ensure precise waste separation and maximise storage capacity through waste compression.
The Environment Protection Department's latest report revealed that Hong Kong's solid waste recovery rate increased to 32% in 2022 from 31% in 2021, with over 420,000 tonnes of waste recovered for recycling. Despite this progress, Hong Kong aims to further boost the recovery rate to 40-45% by 2035 through initiatives like waste-charging schemes and mandatory producers' liability programmes for specific waste categories.
Green AI's commitment to innovation extends beyond smart bins, as the company has developed an AI-driven waste sorting machine for the post-collection recycling market. With patent applications filed for its technology in Hong Kong and mainland China, Green AI has amassed a database of 500,000 data points on 40 waste categories to facilitate precise sorting.
Cola Lam emphasised the importance of advanced technology in waste sorting, stating, "We integrate additional sensors into AI cameras to enable fine-sorting by material."
