The Lenus chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) support system, which involves patients using a dedicated app to monitor their symptoms, has shown promising results since its launch in March 2023. The Humber Health Partnership reports a significant 40% decrease in the number of patients requiring hospital readmission for treatment, thanks to this system.

Looking ahead, the partnership aims to further reduce patient visits, potentially by up to 90%, by leveraging AI technology to analyse the data collected through the app. Patients are encouraged to regularly input information about their well-being, enabling the system to gather valuable insights. Additionally, the app allows direct communication with NHS clinics, facilitating prompt initiation of treatment when needed.

Professor Mike Crooks, overseeing the service, highlighted the proactive nature of the app, stating, "This prompts them to make contact to initiate treatment early, so that we can give them the care they need to get them back on the right path before the point they need to come into hospital." By utilising AI for data analysis, medical professionals can identify patterns and triggers that may indicate a worsening of COPD, enabling timely interventions to support patients before hospitalisation becomes necessary.

Ruth, diagnosed with COPD at a young age, shared her positive experience with the Lenus app. Prior to using the app, she made frequent hospital visits, but now, she hardly needs to go at all. Ruth expressed her satisfaction, saying, "Now those visits have been cut down to virtually zero. If I need to reach out to a clinician, I know that the app's there and I can do that."
