Huawei Aims for 100,000 Apps on Harmony OS Within a Year
Huawei aims for 100,000 apps on Harmony OS within a year to achieve self-reliance. The company currently has over 15,000 applications on Harmony catering to basic needs. Huawei Chairman Xu Zhijun emphasises the importance of a diverse range of apps for ecosystem maturity.
Xu stated, "For the Harmony ecosystem to be mature in meeting consumer needs, 100,000 apps is the milestone, and that is the key objective over the next six to 12 months." This ambitious target underscores the urgency for China to develop its own technologies amidst escalating tensions with the U.S.
Huawei introduced its operating system five years ago following U.S. sanctions that severed support for Google's Android. Xu highlighted the company's accelerated efforts in developing its own system due to these sanctions. Despite the progress made, Xu stressed the importance of user adoption for the system's success.
Encouraging developers to enrich app offerings, Xu called on government agencies, state companies, and social organisations to utilise Harmony as their operating system. He also urged consumers to be patient with the system's current state, stating that increased usage would expedite its maturity.
Huawei unveiled Harmony in 2019, shortly after facing trade restrictions from the U.S. over alleged security concerns. Xu affirmed the company's commitment to investing in the Harmony ecosystem, aiming to overcome challenges and achieve success.
In a statement, Xu declared, "No way back leads to victory. Huawei will unwaveringly invest in developing the Harmony ecosystem, and strive to make the impossible possible."
