Huawei Unveils Mate 70 Series Featuring New Kirin 9020 Chip
Huawei launches Mate 70 series with new Kirin 9020 chip and HarmonyOS NEXT. Mate 70 Pro achieves performance benchmark score comparable to iPhone 14. Kirin 9020 chip features 12-core design potentially outperforming competitors.
During the product launch event, Yu Chengdong, Chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, emphasised the unique position of the Mate series in the market, stating, “The Mate series has always been imitated but never surpassed. Copying will not lead to success.”
The significance of this launch lies in Huawei's ability to innovate despite facing challenges due to US sanctions since 2019, which have restricted the company's access to crucial technologies such as semiconductors and software from US suppliers. By developing the Kirin chip in-house and introducing HarmonyOS, Huawei demonstrates resilience in navigating these obstacles.
The Mate 70 series includes four models: Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro, Mate 70 Pro+, and Mate 70 RS. While specific processor details have not been officially disclosed, tech blogger Digital Chat Station suggests that the Mate 70 Pro, Pro+, and RS models are equipped with the new Kirin 9020 chip, whereas the standard Mate 70 utilises the older Kirin 9010.
According to performance benchmarks, the Huawei Mate 70 Pro achieves a score of approximately 1.25 million on AnTuTu, comparable to the iPhone 14's score of around 1.28 million. The Kirin 9020 chip is reported to feature a 12-core design with high-performance, mid-performance, and efficiency cores, potentially surpassing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor.
In addition to the native Harmony ecosystem, Huawei offers HarmonyOS 4.3 as an Android-compatible alternative, with the option for users to upgrade to HarmonyOS 5.0, a non-Android compatible version and a pioneer edition of HarmonyOS NEXT. Over 15,000 native HarmonyOS applications and services are now accessible to users.
Yu highlighted that the Mate 70 series delivers a 31% faster frame rate and a 40% overall performance improvement compared to the previous Mate 60 series. The standard Mate 70 model is priced between RMB 5,499 ($827) and RMB 6,999 ($965), varying based on the storage configuration.
In the context of mainland China's smartphone market in the third quarter of 2024, Huawei held a 16% market share, following Vivo (19%), Honor (15%), Xiaomi (15%), and Apple (14%), as reported by market analysts Canalys.
