Las Vegas Cybertruck Incident: Suspect Allegedly Used ChatGPT to Plan Explosion, Police Report
Authorities revealed that the individual behind the Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year's Day reportedly utilised the popular chatbot ChatGPT to orchestrate the blast. The suspect allegedly turned to ChatGPT to calculate the necessary amount of explosives for the detonation, as per officials' statements to the press.
Identified as Matthew Livelsberger, a 37-year-old active-duty Army soldier from Colorado Springs, the person found deceased inside the Cybertruck was determined to have acted alone in the incident, which the FBI believes to be a case of suicide.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department highlighted that this event marked the first known instance on U.S. soil where ChatGPT was employed in constructing an explosive device. This development has sparked concerns among critics of artificial intelligence, who fear its potential misuse for destructive purposes.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department emphasised, "Of particular note, we also have clear evidence in this case now that the suspect used ChatGPT artificial intelligence to help plan his attack." He further stated, "This is the first incident that I am aware of on U.S. soil where ChatGPT is utilised to help an individual build a particular device."
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, responded to the situation by affirming their commitment to responsible AI usage. The company assured that their models are designed to reject harmful instructions and that in this case, ChatGPT provided information already available online while cautioning against harmful or illegal activities.
The FBI clarified that there was no definitive connection between the Cybertruck explosion and a truck attack in New Orleans that resulted in casualties. They also mentioned that the suspect did not harbour any ill will towards U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and likely suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Authorities disclosed that Livelsberger's phone contained a six-page manifesto, which is currently under investigation for further insights into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
