Lenovo and Alibaba Join Forces to Develop AI Computers

Lenovo Group partners with Alibaba Group Holding to create AI products. Collaboration includes AI PCs, other AI-powered devices, and enterprise intelligence solutions. Lenovo emphasises practical application and user feedback in the next stage of AI development.

Lenovo Group, the world's largest PC maker, has announced a collaboration with Alibaba Group Holding to create a range of artificial intelligence (AI) products. This partnership comes as tech giants in China compete to attract more users to their generative AI offerings.

The joint venture will focus on developing AI PCs, which are equipped with semiconductors designed to run AI tasks locally. Additionally, the companies will work on other AI-powered devices and enterprise intelligence solutions. Lenovo made the announcement during its Tech World event in Shanghai.

Lenovo has also engaged in "in-depth cooperation and joint innovation" with various domestic enterprises and organisations, including the Institute for AI Industry Research under Tsinghua University in Beijing.

During the event, Lenovo unveiled special versions of its AI PC, the Yoga Book 9i, along with other AI-powered devices. These computers feature a personalised AI agent called Lenovo Xiaotian, supported by Alibaba's language model Tongyi Qianwen.

The collaboration with Alibaba is part of Lenovo's strategic focus on AI, aligning with the global trend of integrating AI technology into various products and services. The company aims to meet the projected rise in demand for AI-enabled machines.

Lenovo's chairman and CEO, Yang Yuanqing, emphasised the importance of practical application in the next stage of AI development. He stated that user feedback, continuous improvement, and innovation are crucial for success.

According to market research firm IDC, AI PCs are expected to become mainstream in the Chinese market, with an estimated 85% share among new PCs by 2027.

Eddie Wu Yongming, the CEO of Alibaba, attended the Lenovo event and reaffirmed the company's commitment to a "users first" and "AI-driven" approach. Alibaba has been actively collaborating with Lenovo and other major e-commerce companies to promote AI-based products.

Lenovo recently renewed its partnership with JD.com, another major e-commerce player in China, to drive sales of new AI devices. The goal is to generate 120 billion yuan (US$16.6 billion) in revenue from 2024 to 2026 through online and offline channels.

In addition to consumer-focused products, Lenovo is also targeting professional users seeking devices for generative AI tasks. The company recently unveiled a series of workstations powered by chips and software from Nvidia, a leading supplier of graphics processors used in AI computing.
