Lenovo Unveils Groundbreaking 17.3-Inch Transparent Display Laptop Concept
Lenovo unveils its first concept laptop with a transparent display at the Mobile World Congress. The 17.3-inch ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept features a microLED display that is 55% transparent. The laptop includes a transparent touch screen base that doubles as a virtual keyboard and drawing tablet.
Lenovo Group, the world's largest PC maker, has made a groundbreaking announcement by unveiling its first-ever concept laptop with a transparent display. This comes as the company reported its first year-on-year quarterly revenue growth since late 2022. The 17.3-inch ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept was showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. It features a microLED display that is 55% transparent when turned off and becomes opaque when set to peak brightness.
One of the standout features of this innovative laptop is its base, which is a transparent touch screen that serves as both a virtual keyboard and a drawing tablet. Additionally, Lenovo has incorporated its artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content software into the device, further enhancing its capabilities.
While the prototype laptop is currently in the "proof-of-concept" stage, Lenovo has confirmed that it has successfully completed technical feasibility verifications. The design is specifically targeted towards content creators, product experts, and reviewers, catering to their unique needs and requirements.
Lenovo is not the first PC maker to explore the integration of transparent displays into their products. In 2010, Samsung Electronics, a South Korean giant, showcased a 14-inch transparent laptop prototype that boasted 40% transparency when the screen was turned off. However, developing transparent laptops presents more challenges compared to transparent television screens due to the higher resolution requirements for word processing and other computer tasks.
Other companies have also ventured into the realm of transparent displays. LG, a leading South Korean display manufacturer, recently unveiled a transparent 77-inch OLED TV at the CES expo in Las Vegas. They have expressed their intention to ship the product later this year. Chinese consumer electronics brand Xiaomi introduced the transparent Mi TV Lux in 2020, which was a part of their 10th-anniversary celebration. The 55-inch OLED TV was priced at 49,999 yuan (approximately US$6,950).
