The Logitech G Yeti Orb and Yeti GX are USB microphones for streamers, podcasters, and content creators. Both offer excellent audio quality and compatibility with Logitech's G Hub software, but there are some key differences between the two models. Let's take a deeper look at the Yeti Orb and Yeti GX!

The Yeti Orb has a unique orb-like shape wrapped in fabric and plastic, while the Yeti GX has a more traditional rectangular design. Both microphones have a plastic build but feel very sturdy and well-constructed. This plastic construction helps keep them lightweight, an important factor for those who may need to transport their microphones or have limited desk space. The Yeti GX weighs in at 616 grams including its desktop stand. The Yeti Orb comes in at a lighter 230 grams. For those prioritizing ultra-portability or limited surface space, the Orb's compact size and lower weight profile may be preferable. Aesthetically, the Yeti GX's design may blend in better on a desk. Both mics are compatible with Logitech G Hub for EQ, effects, profiles and lighting control.

The Yeti GX has physical controls for mute and volume via a scroll wheel, while the Yeti Orb is fully controlled via software. This could be preferable or not, depending on your needs and preferences. I prefer having physical controls for volume and mute rather than relying solely on software. It allows for quicker and more intuitive adjustments without needing to navigate menus or click buttons on screen. For live streaming and content creation workflows that demand fast, on-the-fly changes, physical dials and buttons can be easier to operate than pausing to fiddle with settings in an app. Additionally, the Yeti GX features a scroll wheel on the side of the microphone which serves multiple functions. In addition to adjusting the gain level up or down, the scroll wheel can be clicked inward to activate the Smart Audio Lock feature. Smart Audio Lock is an audio processing mode that automatically adjusts the gain to help prevent clipping of the audio signal, even during sudden loud vocalisations directly into the mic capsule. So for live streamers and content creators worried about unexpected peaks in volume disrupting their audio, Smart Audio Lock can provide peace

of mind.

Both mics use standard 1/4" threading for mounting and include desk stands, though only the GX includes a thread adapter for mounting on boom arms or stands with 5/8" threads which is convenient.

The Yeti GX uses a dynamic capsule while the Yeti Orb has a condenser capsule. Condenser microphones are generally more sensitive and pick up more ambient room sound compared to dynamic mics. Frequency response for the Yeti GX is 60Hz - 18.5kHz while the Yeti Orb is 70Hz - 20kHz, though real-world difference is minimal. Maximum bitrate is 24-bit/96kHz for the GX and 24-bit/48kHz for the Orb. The GX's dynamic capsule isolates my voice much better for a cleaner sound. Its supercardioid pattern is also tighter and more focused on where I'm speaking. The Yeti Orb's cardioid pattern is still quite directional but picks up more room sound from the sides. In use, the GX isolates vocals from background noise better for a cleaner sound. The Yeti GX's tighter supercardioid polar plot does an excellent job focusing strictly on sound from the front. It minimizes capturing of sidetones so my voice remained the clear focus of recordings. Even subtle noises like keyboard clicks or nearby conversation were less noticeable on

tracks made with the GX.

For the price, the Yeti Orb is a solid entry-level microphone. But the Yeti GX's superior audio quality, features and build make it worth the upgrade for serious streamers and content creators. Those prioritising budget may be happy with the Orb, but most will appreciate the GX's performance, especially for noise-sensitive applications like gaming streams. Its dynamic capsule and supercardioid polar pattern help it naturally decrease background noise and focus on the voice. If you're not super tech-savvy, Smart Audio Lock also provides simple live processing. For its balanced performance and value, the Logitech G Yeti GX gets my recommendation.

In terms of value, both microphones provide quality features for their respective price points. The Yeti Orb's $89 price is very reasonable considering its excellent audio quality and plug-and-play simplicity. For casual users on a budget, it delivers great value.

However, the Yeti GX truly earns its $219 price tag through superior audio performance, onboard controls, and build quality suitable for professional use. When factoring in its noise-cancelling abilities, customizable software, and longevity for serious content creation, the Yeti GX proves itself very much worth the upgrade for professionals and enthusiasts. While costing over twice as much, it will save users money in the long run by eliminating the need for additional audio treatment like soundproofing. For the quality it offers, $219 represents strong value for a premium USB microphone.
