Meta Issues Warning to Quest Owners Over Software Bug

Meta, the company behind the popular Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest 2 VR headsets, has recently issued a warning about a serious software problem affecting some of their devices. A software glitch has caused certain headsets to fail to boot up correctly, rendering them unusable. Users on the Meta Quest forums have reported that their headsets have essentially been "bricked" due to this issue.

In a statement addressing the problem, Meta acknowledged, "We've discovered a software update issue that caused some Quest 2/3/3S headsets to be unresponsive and unable to start up correctly. We are actively working on resolving the issue for all users, but in most cases, you are now able to use your device normally." The company reassured affected users that they are available to provide assistance for any devices that remain unresponsive.

According to posts on the Community forums, the likelihood of encountering this issue is higher if the headset has not been used for an extended period and requires a software update upon being used again. The problem occurs during the update process, leading to the headset becoming unresponsive.

Meta has advised users to await further updates before using headsets that have been inactive for a while, as rectifying the issue with a subsequent update may not be straightforward. For users experiencing problems with their Quest 2 or Quest 3 headsets, Meta has encouraged them to seek support from the company.

For owners of the Quest 3S, Meta has introduced a device returns program. Users can log in to their Meta accounts on the Help Center website to check if their device has been impacted by the software bug. However, owners of older headsets may face challenges as these devices are less likely to be covered by warranties, potentially leaving them with out-of-pocket expenses. One affected user shared that they were only offered a small discount on a new model after their headset malfunctioned.
