Meta's Quest 3 to Transform into Windows 11 PC

However, it's important to note that this doesn't mean the Quest 3 will run Windows natively. Instead, users will be able to stream from their own Windows 11 PC or a virtual Windows Cloud PC, accessible via a Windows 365 subscription primarily targeted at professional and business users.


According to a Microsoft blog post, the seamless integration will allow users to connect to their local Windows PC or Windows 365 Cloud PC from their Quest headset, setting up a private, high-quality, multiple-monitor workstation in a matter of seconds. This feature is set to be available for public preview in December.

This development will bring the Quest 3 series closer in competition with the technically impressive Apple Vision Pro headset, marketed as a "spatial computer" rather than just a VR headset. The upcoming Windows 11 VR experience will allow users to configure multiple virtual monitors within their Quest 3 or Quest 3S field of view.


During Meta Connect 2024 in September, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at future Windows 11 integration plans, teasing the ease of pairing a Quest headset with a Windows 11 PC simply by looking at the keyboard. It is unclear to what extent a Meta Quest 3 user can control Windows 11 using gestures similar to the Vision Pro.


Currently, third-party apps such as Virtual Desktop and Immersed are popular among Quest owners looking to use their headsets for productivity. Meta and Microsoft will need to improve the user experience in order to move this integration forward effectively.


While the combination of Meta and Windows 11 offers exciting possibilities, it may not match the optical clarity of the Apple Vision Pro. The Quest 3 has a contextual resolution of about 25 pixels per degree, while the Apple headset has around 34 pixels per degree, which is especially useful when viewing text-heavy virtual screens. Despite this technical advantage, the Vision Pro's sales momentum has not significantly increased.
