Microsoft Updates Bing, Edge Browsers With Advance ChatGPT Features
Microsoft's web browsers are now more powerful than they've ever been before.
The software giant on Tuesday announced it was partnering with OpenAI to incorporate a new next-generation large language model on Bing and Edge, which is touted as being designed specifically for search and "more powerful" than the viral chatbot ChatGPT.
The new Bing brings an interactive chat experience that allows you to refine your search for complex queries. You can, for instance, ask it to create a detailed itinerary for your next vacation, and it'll provide you with locations you can visit, complete with links and annotations. In case you're not satisfied with the engine's response, you can ask for more details, clarity or ideas until you get the answer you're looking for.
When you need inspiration, Bing is now capable of generating content for different purposes. Let's say you're planning to host a trivia night with your friends, you can ask the search engine to create the quiz for you. It also cites all its sources via links, letting you view the web content it references for yourself.
Apart from these, Bing's search function benefits from some improvements. It can now deliver more relevant results for things like sports scores, stock prices and weather updates, not to mention the addition of a new sidebar that shows more comprehensive answers for your queries. Answers are also summarised, saving you from having to scroll through multiple links to find what you're looking for.
The new Bing is available today in a limited preview on desktop. You can join the waitlist to try the new features by signing up for the waitlist here. Microsoft says it'll continue to scale the preview to millions of users in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Edge similarly now boasts a range of AI-powered functionalities, namely chat and compose. The browser features a new sidebar, where you can ask the AI to, for instance, summarise a lengthy report and compare it to others like it. You can also ask the browser to draft posts for you, with it being able to adapt the format, length and tone based on the web page you're on.
Similar to the new Bing, the updated Edge is also available now via a preview. You can download the preview build of the browser here.
Both the new Bing and Edge are built on a new AI model that Microsoft and OpenAI are calling Prometheus. The proprietary collection of capabilities and techniques allows the two browsers to deliver more relevant, timely and targeted results as well as promote safety. Prometheus supposedly has safeguards in place to combat harmful content on the web and address issues like misinformation and disinformation.
Microsoft's announcement comes on the heels of Google's announcement of its long-rumoured ChatGPT-like service called Bard. The "experimental conversational AI service" will similarly be incorporated in Google's search engines to deliver human-like responses to queries and prompts.
