Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced a partnership with instant messaging company Discord to integrate the popular communication service with the PlayStation network.

SIE stated that the company made a minority investment in Discord as part of the latter’s Series H round. This will allow Sony to “bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile” starting in early 2022.

Both Discord and Sony are currently working to connect Discord with players’ social and gaming experiences on the PlayStation Network. Jim Ryan, SIE’s President and CEO, mentioned that he is excited to start SIE’s journey with Discord to “empower players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences.”

The investment and the subsequent partnership between the two companies might mean that the Discord app will be available to download on PlayStation consoles by early 2022. This is great news for video gamers, whether they play on console or PC. With the increasing number of games supporting cross-platform play, a single communication app that works across PlayStation, PCs, mobile phones and Xbox is definitely handy.

Gamers on the web have expressed their happiness at the potential integration, with others commenting on how this would be better than fiddling with the in-game communications tools that online multiplayer games provide.

Whatever the result of the partnership will be, it was not made clear if it will be available on the PS4, PS5 or both consoles. If Discord is coming to the PlayStation consoles, then players who have a Discord account and find the PlayStation’s chat feature lacking will greatly benefit from the app’s addition.

Jim Ryan also mentioned that more news about the partnership will come in the coming months. To stay updated, check out SIE’s blog page and Discord’s Twitter page.
