OpenAI Contemplates Challenging Google with New Browser
OpenAI is considering developing a web browser to complement its chatbot. The company has engaged in discussions with various developers for search product enhancements. Google's dominance in the browser market faces scrutiny amid antitrust concerns.
The company has been in talks regarding the search tool with various website and app developers, including Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline, with some individuals having seen prototypes or designs of the potential products.
This potential move could position OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, in direct competition with Google, a dominant force in the browser and search sectors. OpenAI has already made strides in the search market with SearchGPT. In response to the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, Google's parent company, Alphabet, introduced its generative AI chatbot, Gemini, last year, aiming to strengthen its AI capabilities.
Following the news, Alphabet's shares experienced a decline of approximately 1% in after-hours trading, following a 5% drop during regular trading hours on Thursday. Google's stronghold in the browser market faced scrutiny after the U.S. Department of Justice suggested that the company divest its Chrome browser to address concerns about its dominance in online search.
OpenAI has also explored the possibility of integrating artificial intelligence features into devices manufactured by Samsung, a significant business partner of Google, according to sources familiar with the matter cited in The Information's report. The company already collaborates with Apple, providing technology to power the "Apple Intelligence" features on new devices.
Despite these discussions and developments, The Information report indicates that OpenAI is not on the verge of launching a browser. Requests for comments from Google, OpenAI, and Samsung in response to Reuters' inquiries were not immediately answered.
