OpenAI is developing a social media platform similar to X, formerly known as Twitter, according to a report by The Verge citing multiple sources familiar with the project.

The internal prototype reportedly features a social feed focused on ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities. The project remains in early stages, and it is unclear whether it will be launched as a standalone app or integrated into ChatGPT.
OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has been privately seeking feedback from external parties about the platform, the report said.
The move could heighten tensions between Altman and billionaire Elon Musk, who owns X and co-founded OpenAI before leaving the company in 2018. Musk has become a vocal critic of OpenAI’s direction.
In February, Musk led a consortium that made an unsolicited USD 97.4 billion bid to take control of OpenAI, which Altman rejected. Musk also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman last year, accusing them of straying from the company’s original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity.
Earlier this month, OpenAI filed a countersuit, accusing Musk of harassment and attempting to obstruct its transition to a for-profit model. A jury trial is scheduled for spring next year.
The potential launch of a social media platform could also place OpenAI in direct competition with Meta, which is reportedly developing a standalone Meta AI service. In February, Altman responded to reports about Meta’s plans on X, saying, “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.”
Both Meta and X have access to vast amounts of user-generated public content, which they use to train their AI models.
