OpenAI Launches Free AI Training Course for Teachers
OpenAI and Common Sense Media have launched a free AI training course for teachers. ChatGPT's popularity in education encourages the creation of responsible AI usage initiatives. The training course aims to prepare K-12 teachers to use ChatGPT for educational purposes.
This initiative, announced on Wednesday, seeks to equip teachers with knowledge in these fields.
The November 2022 launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot sparked a surge in interest in generative AI, propelling it to the top of the global list of fastest-growing applications. Generative AI, trained on massive amounts of data, is capable of creating new human-like content, assisting users in tasks such as draughting term papers, completing science assignments, and even writing entire novels.
Teachers were taken aback when ChatGPT was introduced during the academic year, realising its potential for misuse as a tool for cheating and plagiarism. This discovery sparked widespread criticism and subsequent school bans.
OpenAI, supported by Microsoft and other investors and valued at US$157 billion in its most recent funding round, has formed a dedicated team to promote the responsible use of AI in education. This team is led by former Coursera executive Leah Belsky, who expressed her desire to make AI available to all students and teachers while providing them with the skills they need to use it responsibly and effectively.
Belsky emphasised ChatGPT's high student adoption rate and positive reception from parents, who see AI skills as critical for future career opportunities.
The training course, designed for teachers from kindergarten to 12th grade, explains how to use the ChatGPT chatbot for educational purposes such as creating lesson materials and improving departmental meetings. This course, which is hosted on the Common Sense Media website, is the first offering from OpenAI's partnership with Common Sense Media.
