This move puts OpenAI in direct competition with tech giant Alphabet Inc.'s Google and AI search startup Perplexity.

According to an anonymous source familiar with the matter, the feature will allow users to ask ChatGPT questions and receive answers that incorporate information from the web, including citations from sources like Wikipedia and blog posts. In some cases, the results may even include relevant images alongside written responses. For example, if a user asks how to change a doorknob, the response might include a helpful diagram.

While reports of OpenAI's search product surfaced in February, the specific details of how it will function have not been previously disclosed. OpenAI has chosen not to comment on the matter, leaving room for speculation and anticipation.

The development of a search feature is a strategic move for OpenAI, as it faces increasing competition in the chatbot market. Perplexity, an AI-powered search engine, has gained popularity and achieved a valuation of $1 billion by prioritising accuracy and citations. Google, on the other hand, has been actively exploring AI-driven enhancements to its core search experience and is expected to unveil its latest plans at the upcoming I/O event.

Speculation about OpenAI's search plans has been rife on social media platforms. Some users on X (formerly known as Twitter) have pointed to the existence of the web page search.chatgpt.com as a potential indicator of OpenAI's search feature. Although the page currently displays a "not found" message, it briefly redirected to the official chatgpt.com website, where users can interact with the chatbot.

If OpenAI successfully launches this search feature, it will significantly expand the capabilities of ChatGPT. Currently, the platform can retrieve search results for specific queries, such as the weather in San Francisco, but this feature is limited to paying users. Additionally, while the current search option provides citations, it has been known to encounter occasional inaccuracies. For instance, when asked about President Biden's weekend activities, it cited a news story from 2023, accurately stating that he was in Delaware.
