OpenAI Surpasses 1 Million Paid Business Users

OpenAI has surpassed 1 million paid business users with ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Edu. Internal discussions at OpenAI point to higher-priced subscriptions for upcoming large-language models. ChatGPT Plus is currently priced at US$20 per month, while the free tier attracts hundreds of millions of users each month.

The AI company's chatbot has been widely adopted for its advanced large language model, resulting in a significant increase over the 600,000 users reported in April. CEO Sam Altman's efforts to encourage corporate adoption of ChatGPT are clearly showing positive results.


In a separate development, The Information reported that OpenAI executives are considering introducing higher-priced subscriptions for upcoming large-language models such as the reasoning-focused "Strawberry" and a new flagship LLM called "Orion." According to a source familiar with the matter, OpenAI's internal discussions have considered subscription fees of up to $2,000 per month.


Currently priced at $20 per month, ChatGPT Plus is a part of OpenAI's offerings, while the free tier of the model attracts hundreds of millions of users monthly. OpenAI, with the support of Microsoft, is actively developing "Strawberry" to empower AI models to conduct in-depth research, as previously reported by Reuters in July.


"Strawberry" uses a specialised approach to post-training OpenAI's generative AI models, which improves their performance in specific areas after being trained on massive amounts of general data. Recent pricing discussions follow reports that Apple and Nvidia are considering investments in OpenAI, with the ChatGPT creator potentially worth more than $100 billion.


The AI startup behind the immensely popular ChatGPT app revealed last week that the chatbot has over 200 million weekly active users, more than doubling the previous autumn season's figures.
