OpenAI Unveils Revolutionary AI Model for Complex Problem-Solving

OpenAI introduces its new AI model, 'o1', which is capable of solving complex multistep problems. The model spends more time computing answers, which leads to more accurate results. ChatGPT Plus and Team users can now access a preview version.

The new model, codenamed 'Strawberry' during development and officially dubbed 'o1', represents a significant leap forward in AI capabilities, particularly in tackling multi-step problems in areas such as mathematics and coding.

The o1 model represents a novel approach to AI-driven problem solving. Unlike its predecessors, o1 is intended to spend more time processing answers before responding to user queries. This deliberate pause enables the model to conduct a more thorough analysis, yielding more accurate and comprehensive answers to complex questions.

"As an early model, it doesn't yet have many of the features that make ChatGPT useful, like browsing the web for information and uploading files and images'" said OpenAI in a blog post. "But for complex reasoning tasks this is a significant advancement and represents a new level of AI capability" .

The release of o1 signals a new chapter for OpenAI, prompting the company to change its naming convention. 'Given this, we are resetting the counter back to 1 and naming this series OpenAI o1', the company stated, emphasising the model's revolutionary status.

OpenAI is making a preview version of o1 available to paid Plus and Team users via its popular chatbot, ChatGPT. This announcement comes at a critical time for the San Francisco-based company, which is reportedly seeking billions of dollars in funding amid increased competition in the AI sector.

The development of o1 is part of a larger industry trend towards more advanced AI systems capable of human-like reasoning. Competitors such as Anthropic and Google have also been developing similar capabilities, demonstrating the fierce competition in this rapidly evolving field.

OpenAI's approach to developing o1 included innovative training techniques. In May 2023, the company published a research paper outlining its efforts to improve AI systems' ability to solve mathematical problems. The paper described a training method that rewarded the model for each correct step in the problem-solving process rather than simply producing correct final answers.

Noam Brown, a research scientist at OpenAI, explained on social media that the company is currently releasing o1 in preview to gather user feedback and identify areas for improvement. This user-centric approach demonstrates OpenAI's dedication to refining and improving its AI models through real-world applications and user experiences.

The user experience with o1 will be different from that of ChatGPT. Before responding to a user prompt, o1 will pause for a few seconds. During this time, the model considers several related prompts and summarises what it believes to be the best response. This technique, known as 'chain of thought' prompting, enables more nuanced and thoughtful responses to complex questions.
