Hacktivists affiliated with Russian intelligence have previously proved their expertise by disrupting websites in what they billed as a training exercise.

Cyble Inc., a cybersecurity firm, has warned of possible large-scale attacks during the Olympics based on the hackers' assertions. With geopolitical tensions and Russia's absence from the Games, organisers are on high alert for cyber attacks. For months, government agencies, commercial sector partners, and cybersecurity specialists have worked together to strengthen defences.

Eric Greffier of Cisco Systems France underlined the importance of being fully prepared for cyber threats, noting ongoing efforts to discover and mitigate vulnerabilities. The French government's cybersecurity agency, ANSSI, has been working closely with essential entities involved in the Games to ensure that strong security measures are in place.

The United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) is also actively involved, sharing intelligence and working with French counterparts to reduce cyber dangers. However, experts remain cautious, warning that hackers may target less secure areas such as hospitality, posing additional hazards.

In the past, hackers have targeted big athletic events such as the Olympics and anti-doping authorities. The 2018 Winter Games in South Korea, as well as subsequent attacks on anti-doping groups, highlight the ongoing threat faced by cyber attackers. Concerns about cyber intrusion have grown as Russia is barred from participating in the Games.

As the countdown to the Paris Olympics begins, cybersecurity officials are on high alert, looking for any indications of hostile behaviour. Recent occurrences, such as social media manipulation and bogus websites, highlight the changing cyber world and the need for increased awareness.

Jeremy Couture, who oversees cybersecurity operations for the Paris 2024 organising committee, highlighted the significance of resilience in the face of potential cyber attacks. Using lessons learnt from previous large events, preparations are underway to guarantee the Games run successfully despite cybersecurity risks.ges.
