Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 Review: MASSIVE Upgrades?!

It’s no secret that Sennheiser had a lot of catching up to do after the first Momentum True Wireless earbuds were launched. They sounded great, but battery life was horrid and there was just a lack of features for the price. Well, Sennheiser has righted their wrongs with the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 (MTW 2).

The first major difference you’ll notice (if you previously had the first generation) is the change in case colour. It’s now a darker gray, along with a white rubber logo on top instead of black. But the handfeel is different too. The fabric covering of the case feels like it’s weaved tighter, resulting in a smoother texture that should repel dirt better than the old case.

The case is the same size, but the earbuds themselves are 2g lighter. It might not seem like a lot, but it definitely helps to make them feel more comfortable in the ear. The silver faceplates still support touch controls, and they’re just as responsive.

Moving on to the big changes, we now see active noise cancellation in the MTW 2.

The best part? The sound quality still remains the same. There’s little to no degradation from the ANC being turned on, retaining the same excellent sound quality that we loved from the first generation. Granted, the ANC isn’t the absolute best, but it works and works well.

The soundstage is spacious while you get a good sense of instrument position. Bass is tight and controlled, while you get plenty of air with string instruments and female vocals. You still get the classic Sennheiser sound that’s uncoloured and neutral. All in all, if you came to these earphones looking to be impressed, you will be.

The other big change is the increased battery life. There were some major issues with the battery life (and even a case drain issue) with the first generation, at just four hours in the earbuds.

With the MTW 2, you get seven hours in the buds, with an additional three charges in the case for a total of 28 hours. That’s not the best you’ll find on the market, but again, they’re no longer dead last in the battery rankings.

The originals weren’t cheap, at S$469, and these aren’t either, at $449. At that price, I would have liked to see some stuff improved, like the abysmal EQ function that is a major pain to try and tinker with, but for the clean and detailed sound quality that you get, these are still a worthy investment for those who like the Sennheiser sound signature.
