Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless Review: One of the Best True Wireless Earbuds on the Market

Updated: Aug 5, 2022

True wireless earbuds are immensely convenient but no matter which pair you look at, there are downsides to all of them. Whether it’s battery life, sound quality, mic quality, there’s always something that impedes true wireless buds from being a true equivalent of their wired counterparts.

Sound quality is possibly the biggest and most widespread issue and Sennheiser has finally come out to put an end to that. The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless earbuds are the brand’s first attempt at entering the true wireless space, and I have to give them major props for how well they’ve done it.

Even though the buds themselves are a bit on the big side, especially if you have smaller ears like me, they fit snugly and there’s very little chance they’ll drop out unless you’re continually jumping around and actively trying to remove them from your ears.

I do love the carrying case, with the gray fabric cover making it look particularly sleek. It’s definitely bulkier than other competitors’ carrying cases, so it’s more likely that consumers would want to keep this in a bag. The earbuds charge through a pair of gold contacts in the case, and the case can be charged via a USB-C connection.

The earbuds last me an average of three hours per charge, slightly under the estimated four hours, but considering that I listen to music at 80% volume, three hours is a decent amount of battery life. The case holds enough power for an extra two charges, giving me a total of nine hours, but users who listen to music at lower levels can expect up to 12 hours.

But where the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless shines is in the sound quality. Smooth with decent bass and excellent sound separation, I daresay these are one of the best sounding true wireless earbuds in the market right now. If you’re not a fan of the sound, Sennheiser does include an in-app equaliser for you to tinker with.

The MTWs definitely are on the more neutral side, but has great clarity and detail, so they’re definitely for people who are looking for a clean sound signature without coloration.

Of course, the sound can change based on the tips you use. I personally switched out the stock black ones for a pair of third-party silicon tips but I reckon isolation could be improved even better by using a pair of foam tips like those made by Comply.

Testing the range, I found that the sound only cut out once I put three walls and about seven meters in between my phone and the earbuds. Of course, your mileage may vary but I was pleasantly pleased with how well they performed in terms of wireless connection.

What I wasn’t a fan of, was the way touch controls were implemented. Some are easy enough like tapping once on the left earbud’s face to play and pause music, while others were a bit more tricky to remember, tapping twice for next song and thrice for the previous song for example. The touch surfaces were quite sensitive, which may be an issue for people who run with these as the sweat and salt could result in phantom touches.

Overall though, the Momentum True Wireless (S$469) is an excellent audio product, factoring in the sound quality and the convenience that true wireless affords. The price is a little steep, but in the audio industry, you truly get what you pay for.
