Sigma 105mm f2.8 DG DN Macro Art Lens First Impressions: Beautiful!!

This lens has just been announced by Sigma, it’s the 105mm f/2.8 macro lens for E-mount and L-mount. Here are our first impressions of this all-new macro lens.

We have a sample lens and not a production unit, so we won’t talk too much about performance, but more about the similarities and differences between the 70mm f/2.8 macro lens.

These two lenses are roughly the same size, but you’re seeing more of a new design element in the existing ART lenses in the 105mm f/2.8. Case in point, you have the aperture lock switch here, so when you’re in Auto mode you can lock that. There’s also a declick switch so you can use the lens for shooting videos if you want.

There’s also an AFL button, the AF and MF switch as well as the focal length switch. This is pretty much like all the new ART lenses, you’ll find elements of those in the 105mm f/2.8.

You have 17 elements, 12 groups, 9 rounded diaphragm blades, magnification is 1:1 and close focusing distance is about 29-30cm from the subject. This lens is also compatible with the all-new teleconverters that Sigma has launched, and we’ll test that out in the full review.

With the L-mount variant, you’ll be able to use the USB hub which will allow users to fine-tune the lens. We’ll also talk more about it during the full review.

The diameter of this lens is 62mm so if you’re looking to put a filter on it, that’s the number to remember. The lens is also weather-resistant so you don’t have to worry about rain or dust getting into it.

The lens also weighs 715g, which might seem like a pretty heavy lens, but it feels really good on the Sony A7R IV. In a nutshell, the 105mm f/2.8 is about sharpness, beautiful bokeh and optimal image quality.
