Updated: Aug 21, 2021

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) recently announced that it has sold more than 10 million PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles around the world since the product’s launch on 12 November 2020, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation ever in the company’s history.

Data that have been updated as of 18 July 2021 revealed the latest milestone. It also shed light on how PS5 sales continually surpass that of its precursor, the PlayStation 4.

By providing a platform for new games based on a superhero movie, a sports league and a popular gaming franchise, SIE was able to give players unique gaming experiences during the pandemic.

Aside from recent game releases, SIE celebrated various PlayStation Studios games for the sales achievements they reached as of 18 July 2021. For one, "Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales" from Insomniac Games sold over 6.5 million copies since its release on 12 November 2020.

"MLB The Show 21" — featuring well-known athletes like Fernando Tatís Jr. — became the fastest-selling product in the entire Major League Baseball video game franchise as fans bought more than 2 million copies as of its rollout on 16 April 2021. On the other hand, gamers purchased over 1.1 million copies of "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" as soon as it hit stores on 11 June 2021.

Housemarque's "Returnal" caught the eye of PlayStation users as well. Made available to the public on 30 April 2021, the game quickly sold more than 560,000 units.

Jim Ryan, SIE's President and Chief Executive Officer, was thrilled about the success of the PS5 console and its games.

"I can't express enough the deep gratitude we feel for our passionate community of PlayStation fans who have embraced PS5, and the world-class development and publishing partners who bring such incredible gaming experiences to our platforms," said Ryan.

At the same time, he acknowledged that his company needs to do more in order to maintain its upward momentum.

"While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply. I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE."

SIE also teased upcoming games that players have been anticipating for a while, including Electronic Arts' "Battlefield 2042", Bethesda's "DEATHLOOP" and Ubisoft's "Far Cry 6". "Kena: Bridge of Spirits" from Ember Lab will also be released soon.

PlayStation users will be able to enjoy games like Santa Monica Studios' "God of War: Ragnarok", Polyphony Digital's "Gran Turismo 7" and Guerrilla Games' "Horizon Forbidden West" in the future as well.
