The HyQReal robot, developed as part of the Robot Teleoperativo project at IIT, aims to extend human capabilities to robots, allowing operators to safely perform intricate tasks in dangerous and unstructured settings. Claudio Semini, leading the project, highlighted the collaboration with INAIL to mitigate risks to operators by leveraging the robot's capabilities.
HyQReal's hydraulic system sets it apart from traditional electric actuator-based robots, offering dynamic movement and impressive load-bearing capacity. Despite the complexity and maintenance challenges associated with hydraulics, the robot's design enables it to generate up to 300 newton-meters of torque and deliver 4 kilowatts of power, showcasing its strength and durability.
The robot's head-mounted arms, each capable of lifting 5 kilograms, provide enhanced strength and dexterity compared to other robots in its class. With a focus on intuitive control and advanced mobility, HyQReal's human-controlled interface allows operators to navigate and manipulate objects remotely, ensuring efficient task performance without mechanical limitations.
The HyQReal project integrates four key technologies, including the INAIL-IIT Robotic Arm and the HyQReal hydraulic quadruped, to create a powerful robotic platform. The PILOT Station features the REMOTArm and HEXOTrAc-Plus teleoperation system, along with a 3D immersive VR interface for seamless remote control of the robot.
In collaboration with INAIL, the project aims to enhance workplace safety by utilising robotics for hazardous jobs. While previous tests with a single-armed robot showed promise in firefighting simulations, future advancements will focus on tackling more challenging tasks and improving durability in harsh environments.
Challenges such as enduring extreme heat, optimising energy usage, and enhancing user interfaces remain crucial for the success of teleoperated robots in high-risk scenarios. Researchers anticipate that advancements in voice commands, eye-tracking controllers, and mixed-reality interfaces will enhance efficiency and reduce fatigue in remote operations.
