Toyota engineers have unveiled a transparent, drivable sphere as part of a 2024 innovation project, blending science fiction aesthetics with real-world engineering.

The concept, developed by the Toyota Engineering Society, was created under the theme “What’s this? It’s Amazing!” and showcases the group’s commitment to craftsmanship and technical exploration.

The spherical vehicle features a clear acrylic shell that rotates around a central driver module. The module is mounted on two internal metal rails and powered by wheels that spin the sphere around it.

Control is managed via a joystick, though the demonstration used limited autonomous movement, with the sphere rolling forward and backward by about 3 metres.

To construct the transparent shell, Toyota collaborated with Shinsi, a company known for producing high-strength curved acrylic panels for aquariums. Engineers faced challenges in forming a clear, durable sphere but succeeded after refining the polishing process.

Accessing the vehicle requires removing a third of the sphere’s side as a hatch, and steps are needed to climb inside. While impractical, the design offers 360-degree visibility and a smooth ride on flat surfaces.

Despite its complexity, the sphere is not intended for real-world use. It lacks traction, steering precision, and practicality, making it more of an engineering exercise than a viable transport solution.

The project highlights Toyota’s dedication to innovation and the spirit of monozukuri, a Japanese philosophy of craftsmanship and continuous improvement.
