The couple, Kiara and Joel Brokenbrough of Los Angeles, California, wanted to be “as minimal as possible” when planning their wedding, spending less than US$500 in total for everything. This includes Kiara’s US$47 dress, which she bought from Chinese online fast fashion retailer Shein.

Shein has recently grown in popularity among those looking to shop for affordable new clothes to wear, beating the likes of Amazon and other e-commerce heavyweights, as found by a new research.

According to U.S. news program Good Morning America (GMA) (via the South China Morning Post), the couple held the ceremony off a California motorway, a free location they decorated with a few flowers, a runner and some chairs for the guests to sit on. The flowers and the runner were gifts from family, which further helped the couple reduce their expenses.

There were less than 75 guests at the wedding, with the couple only inviting between 30 to 40 close friends and relatives.

“The people we have there, they understood the assignment, they understood the things that we were trying to do, and they really supported us,” said Kiara.

The bride posted the videos she recorded of her dress and her wedding to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube and has since amassed more than a million views. Many congratulated the couple on their beautiful wedding, while others praised their decision to do away or minimise the usual expenses that is usually expected from such an occasion.

“I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a dress because I had the mindset I’m gonna wear this one time for a few hours,” Kiara added.
