What To Expect in Apple's 18 October Event

If you're an Apple fan, then you might have heard that the company will have a new hardware event on 18 October 2021. Here, it is expected that Apple will launch two new MacBook Pro laptops, a redesigned higher-end Mac mini and the AirPods 3.

Greg Joswiak, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, recently tweeted a teaser video where the word "Unleashed" is seen in a dotted font, possibly hinting at mini LED technology on the way.

The event will be streamed live on Apple's website on 19 October, 1 a.m. Singapore Time or 18 October, 1 p.m. ET.

It's possible that Apple will reveal new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which might not have Intel chips and will instead be powered by Apple's M1X chip, an Arm-based processor.

"The Apple M1X chip, the likely name for a more graphics-intense and professional-focused M1 chip, is indeed still on tap for 2021. We'll likely see it show up first in a new range of MacBook Pros in the next month and a higher-end Mac mini at some point. The M1X has been developed in two variations: both with 10 CPU cores (eight high-performance and two high-efficiency) and either 16 or 32 graphics cores," wrote Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman in the paywalled section of his Power On newsletter.

The M1X could outperform the M1 chip that debuted in 2020, considering that the former has ten CPU cores while the latter has eight. Aside from that, the M1X has 16 or 32 graphics cores versus seven or eight in the M1.

A new Mac mini will reportedly be revealed in the event as well. The same M1X processor might power the redesigned Mac mini, which could have more ports compared to the 2020 M1 model, with Two Thunderbolt / USB 4 Type-C ports and two USB Type-A ports.

We might also see the new AirPods 3 during the event. Rumours have stated that the third-generation AirPods might have a different design that takes cues from the higher-end AirPods Pro but might not come with the "Pro" feature. It's still unclear whether or not the new wireless headphones will have silicone ear tips as leaked images and renders show both possibilities.

The AirPods 3 might also come with shorter stems and a redesigned charging case that has approximately a 20% larger battery versus that of the second-generation AirPods. When it comes to performance, the AirPods 3 could boast a bigger bass.

The return of MacBook features like magnetic MagSafe charging, an HDMI port and an SD card slot is also being anticipated. On the other hand, Apple might be ditching MacBook's OLED touch bar.
