Xpeng and Volkswagen Collaborate to Develop Ultra-Fast Charging Network in China
China's Xpeng Motors and Volkswagen have announced an expansion of their partnership to work together on ultra-fast electric vehicle charging networks in China. The two automakers have signed a memorandum of understanding to allow their customers access to each other's fast-charging networks, which collectively consist of over 20,000 charging piles spread across 420 cities in China. Additionally, they plan to explore the joint establishment of co-branded ultra-fast charging stations.
The collaboration between Xpeng and Volkswagen began in 2023 when Volkswagen acquired a 4.99% stake in Xpeng for approximately $700 million. As part of their partnership, they aim to introduce two Volkswagen-branded EV models by 2026. Volkswagen has also revealed that they have collaborated with Xpeng to develop a new architecture for intelligent and electric vehicles. This joint effort is expected to enable Volkswagen to offer more affordable EVs in China, its largest market.
